Lockout Services
If my key is lost, will I leave with a working key?
Yes, one way or another. If you choose to rekey, the cylinder is set to a new combination and fresh keys are cut for it on the spot, usually two or three, and tested in each door they should open. If you prefer to keep the existing pinning, a new key can be cut to the lock's code or by decoding the cylinder. Either way you are not left relying on a key that is somewhere else. How many keys should a business have, and who should hold them?
Fewer than most businesses think, and every one of them named. Two people who can open, one of whom can be reached on a day off, cover the door. Cleaners and contractors get a key only if they need one and hand it back when the arrangement ends. Write down who has what, collect keys when people leave, and rekey when one does not come back. Interior keys for the cash office or stockroom follow the same rule on a shorter list. Business Lockout Service
Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?
If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder. Broken Key Extraction
How do I check that the repair is holding over the following months?
Once a month for the first season, throw the deadbolt with the door closed and feel for drag or a stop short of full extension, and press on the strike and hinge screws with a screwdriver to confirm they are snug. Repeat at each change of season, since wood moves with humidity. A door that starts needing a shoulder, or a bolt that catches on the strike lip, wants a small adjustment early rather than a repeat of the original problem. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?
The mechanical part of it can. Many keypad or app-controlled deadbolts hide a small keyed cylinder under a cap for the day the batteries fail, and that cylinder can be pinned to your house key so the backup key on your ring is the same one that opens the other doors; some models are key-free and rely on an external battery backup instead. Codes are a separate matter: the locksmith will suggest deleting any code belonging to someone who no longer needs access at the same time. Lock Rekeying
Can I supply my own deadbolt?
Yes. Bring the box, the template and the instructions, and tell the locksmith the model beforehand so the bore and backset can be checked against your door. If the kit turns out to need a larger hole or a different faceplate than the door has, the locksmith adapts the door or suggests a matching model. Hardware bought online sometimes arrives set for a different door thickness, which is a small adjustment on site. Deadbolt Installation
How long does a lock replacement take?
A straightforward like-for-like deadbolt or knob set on a standard door is often a matter of an hour or less including testing. Add time for a reinforced strike, for keying several locks alike and cutting keys, for a smart lock's setup and pairing, and for repairing a split jamb or adapting an older door. When several entrances are done together, the locksmith gives a realistic window before starting so you can plan the day. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
What does the service visit involve, step by step?
The locksmith checks your authority to request the work, examines the door and lock, and tells you what it needs. The knobs, plates and cylinder come off, the case slides out of the door edge and is opened on a bench, cleaned, re-sprung and repaired. Keys are made or the cylinder rekeyed, the door pocket is tidied, everything goes back on, and the strike is adjusted. You test the finished lock from both sides. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks
Do you need to see proof that I own the safe before opening it?
Yes, and it is meant as a protection rather than a hurdle. For a business, identifying yourself as the owner, manager or an authorized employee is usually enough. For an estate, a secondhand purchase or a change of ownership, a bill of sale, transfer document or executor's paperwork fills the same role. This step protects whoever actually has a claim on what is inside the safe, which includes you. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?
It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. Safe Installation & Servicing
Can all my doors be on one key?
Yes, and most homes ask for exactly that. Every exterior cylinder is pinned to the same combination so one controlled key opens the front, back, side and garage entry. A gate or shed padlock on the same keyway can join it. For businesses, the same keyway can carry a small master system where staff keys open only their areas and a manager key opens everything. The keying plan is agreed before any pinning is done. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
What is the difference between rekeying a business and replacing its locks?
Rekeying keeps every lock on the door and changes only the pins inside the cylinder, so a new key works and the old ones stop. Replacing swaps the hardware itself. Commercial cylinders are made to be repinned many times, so rekeying suits any lock in sound condition and leaves the levers, trim and door untouched. Replacement is chosen door by door for cylinders that are worn, corroded or too light for what they protect. Commercial Rekeying
How is accountability maintained when several people hold different levels of keys?
Through the chart and issuance log rather than memory. Each level is tied to named roles or people, each key is marked to reflect its level rather than the door it opens, and any change of hands is recorded with a signed receipt. That record names every authorized holder for a door, though it can only account for a key that was never copied, loaned or picked up by someone outside that list. Master Key System Design
What's the difference between an electric strike and a magnetic lock?
An electric strike fits into the existing door frame and works with the door's own latch or bolt, releasing it briefly for a valid credential while otherwise behaving like an ordinary strike plate. A magnetic lock instead clamps the door shut with an electromagnet mounted at the head of the frame, and it is always installed with a request-to-exit device so someone leaving is never held up looking for a way out. Access Control Installation
Who is responsible for keeping the hardware compliant?
The building owner or the party the owner assigns, often a facilities manager, is responsible for keeping exit hardware in working order and for the fire door assembly testing that goes with it. A locksmith installs and services the hardware and can keep records on the owner's behalf, but the ongoing duty to maintain the assembly sits with whoever holds the building. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys
The key broke off in the door lock. Is that still a lockout call?
Yes, with one extra step. The broken piece is drawn out with extraction tools that grip it and pull straight, never pushed deeper, and then the door is opened normally. The cylinder is checked for worn wafers or salt and cleaned or lubricated, and the key itself is inspected too, since bending, wear or fatigue can snap a key even in a healthy cylinder. A new blade is cut from the two halves or from the code, because a worn copy would break again. Car Lockout Service
What is the small metal blade inside my smart key for?
It is the emergency key. When the fob's battery is flat, or the car's own battery has died and the doors ignore the buttons, the blade unlocks the driver's door mechanically. A small release on the fob lets it slide out. On a replacement fob the locksmith cuts this blade to your door lock and shows you where the keyhole is, since on some cars it hides under a cap on the handle. Car Key Replacement
Can spare keys be made for older vehicles without a chip?
Yes, and it is usually the most straightforward version of this service. A vehicle old enough to use a plain mechanical key has no chip to read or program, so the whole job is cutting a matching blade, either traced from the original or cut to code, and testing it in every lock the first key opens. Spare Car Key Duplication
Does key fob programming use my car's diagnostic port?
On most vehicles, yes. The same connection point used for other vehicle diagnostics is typically how a fob's registration procedure communicates with the car's onboard systems. A few older or simpler key systems are programmed through a different in-car sequence instead, which is one more reason the vehicle's year and model are checked before the procedure begins.
